Dear Jacob,

Yesterday was my last day at the company where I worked for almost seven years. I was “industry newcomer” and developed to leadership position but it was it. It always felt like a safe place, even though career growth was very slow and the chances of advancing to where I wanted to be were minimal. Due to restructuring, my position was downgraded, and I was asked to stay with less responsibility and a 15% lower salary.

As silly as it sounds, I hesitated at first. Even that i graduated the MBA 2 years ago, speak fluently 3 languages, have over 10 years leadership experience and my job quality is excellent. We often cling to familiar environments, even when they’re far from ideal. But at the end I decided to take a risk and leave — and I’m so glad I did. After doing my research, I discovered that my position is worth at least 30% more on the market, and in some companies even 45% more. I would never have realized this without being “pushed” by the situation.

Your words helped me understand this whole process better, gave me courage annd deeper understanding of the process. Now I feel relieved knowing that leaving was truly the right choice. And again thank you, Jacob.

Wow! How inspired! If you have any questions regarding the transition that you’d like me to address in a future edition of Execs and the City — please fire away. Best of luck getting your 30-45% increase… (or more, don’t sell yourself short)
